Seed, song and foraging day 24/10/23

We had a wonderful day walking the land and learning about the trees and their seeds. Gathering in the October sunshine, over the rising mists in the upper medway valley, we started our day with a welcome and a wander to meet the wild rose.

With stories, games and wonderful song, together we shared a wander over and through the land, collecting seeds, leaves and autumn treasure along the way.

As a village, we learned how to process and prepare our gatherings for food and for planting.

We sorted the tree seeds into nuts, fruit and winged seeds. The fruit from crab apple, hawthorn and blackthorn were processed to remove the seeds and then cooked to create a compote. Once the seeds had been planted, we shared a delicious tree tea and fruit compote on top of delicious, fire cooked, hot pancakes.

Thanks to the Children's Forest team for sharing their wonderful song and knowledge with us all!

We are excited to welcome people back to Sawpit Woods for a Winter community gathering on Monday 18th December.

Join us for this community day to wander the land and the woods. Meet some of our native trees & learn about their growth and development. We will share warmth and build our community around a fire and celebrate the middle of winter in the beautiful woods.
